Student Advocacy Series Sessions
Tyee PTSA and Bellevue Council are working together to bring BSD middle school students a series of student advocacy sessions during the mid-winter break. Middle school is an important period to teach students how to advocate for themselves, because self-advocacy is a very useful skill in high school.
6th grade Student Advocacy Session (designed for students)
February 15th at 7pm
Most 6th graders are facing the challenge of transitioning from elementary to middle school. In this session, the focus is on ‘’WHY” and “HOW” to advocate (ask for help or support) while adapting to the middle school setting. Some topics that will be discussed are communicating in this virtual world with teachers/staff, strategies for coping and thriving, getting digitally organized, and more while feeling confident in the process.
Middle School Parent Advocacy Session
February 16th at 7pm
In this session, the focus will be on “WHY” and “HOW” parents should support their students advocating for themselves while in middle school. Students during this time are learning how to find their voices which can be challenging. Some topics discussed are supporting your middle schooler's leadership, social and emotional learning (friends and feelings), communication in the current virtual environment, etc. while they are growing during middle school.
8th grade Student Advocacy Session (designed for students)
February 18th at 7pm
In this session, the focus is on ‘’WHY” and “HOW” to advocate (ask for help or support) given that high school is right around the corner. Some topics that will be discussed are communicating in this virtual world with teachers/staff, strategies for coping and thriving, knowing high school/class options, thinking about a post high school plan, etc. while feeling confident in the high school transition process.
